The
Team Approach:
Drs.
Wittenberg and McBride firmly believe that Orthognathic surgery is best
performed using the team approach in which the patient, the orthodontist,
and the oral and maxillofacial surgeon have integral roles.
The Orthodontist's role:
Your
orthodontist studies the position of your teeth and determines how braces
will prepare your bite for surgery.
Records
document where your teeth are before braces are put on. As your teeth
shift, additional records are taken to help plan the treatment. Some
common records taken are X-ray's of your skull (Cephalometry) and your
mouth (Panorex). Casts that reproduce your teeth and jaws and initial
photographs are also taken.
The surgeon's role:
Dr.
Wittenberg studies your jaws to determine how your imbalance affects
your bite and how your bones may be repositioned to improve your jaw
function. Dr. Wittenberg will perform a detailed examine and determines
with your orthodontist the appropriate treatment.
The treatment plan:
When
your orthodontist and Dr. Wittenberg complete their evaluation, they
may prepare a
treatment plan in one of the several ways: they may sketch your new
profile on paper. They then will discuss with you the different options
from no treatment , to only orthonditical treatment to the combined
treatment between the orthodontist and the surgeon. After discussing
the risks and benefits of the procedure, you have to decide on the final
treatment plan. Changing your mind about surgery in the middle of the
brace treatment will make the treatment more difficult and will prolong
it.
