Aligning
your teeth:
Your
orthodontist's challenge is to use braces to properly position your
teeth for the bite you'll have after the surgery. You may be wearing
braces for six to eighteen months, depending on the position of your
teeth and the type of surgery you're having done. During the preparation
time, you'll see your orthodontist about once a month for adjustments.
Youºre ready for surgery when the casts of the upper and lower jaws
are fitting together well. Remember: your orthodontist is positioning
your teeth for the bite you'll have after surgery, and therefore it
may seem like your braces are making your bite worse than it was before.
Checking the
progress:
Before
the date of the surgery the surgeon will see you more frequently and
obtain more detailed records(impressions of your teeth, photographs
and X-rays) from you. If the surgery is scheduled, your surgeon will
discuss what type of surgery you will have and their risks and benefits.
It
may feel like you have to wear braces forever, but this is vital for
the success of the treatment and don't get frustrated over the long
time period of your treatment.
Before surgery:
You
may be advised to have a physical exam before surgery to assess your
general health. You may visit the hospital to have lab tests done. Don't
eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. You may
check in the day of surgery. An anesthesiologist will discuss your anesthesia
with you . You will receive fluids and medications during the surgery.
Dr. Wittenberg will discuss the risks and benefits of the surgery with
you, and an extensive consent form is given to you for your review and
signature.
